Preliminary Itinerary

  • DAY 1: ARRIVAL TO ROME FROM YOUR CITY

Arrival in Rome and meeting with our accompanying guide who will accompany us throughout our Ignatian experience in Rome. We will cross the door of San Sebastián, which passed through Ignatius when he first arrived in the city on Palm Sunday, March 29, 1523. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and accommodation.
  • DAY 2: THE GREAT BASILICA: SAN JUAN DE LETRAN AND SANTA MARIA LA MAYOR

This morning we will celebrate the Mass in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the largest church in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary. At the Christmas of 1538, Ignatius celebrated his first mass. Then we will visit the Church of San Andrea al Quirinale, built in the place of the first Jesuit novice. The former students here included Ss. Stanislaus Kostka, Robert Southwell, and Luis Gonzaga. We will visit the tomb and the reconstructed rooms of San Estanislao. In the afternoon we will visit the Papal Basilica of San Juan de Letrán. It was here that St. Francis persuaded Pope Innocent III to give him permission to begin the Franciscan Order. The night before, the Pope had seen a man in a dream, holding the unstable building of St. John Lateran. The next day, when Francis appeared before Pope Innocent, His Holiness recognized the face of the dream and consented to Francis his request. In the vicinity is the Santa Staircase, supposedly the stairs that Christ ascended before his condemnation by Pontius Pilate. The rest of the afternoon we will have free. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
  • DAY 3: ROME: SAN PABLO EXTRAMUROS Y CATACUMBAS

In the morning we will go to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, home of the tomb of the Apostle Paul, also known as the Apostle of the Pagans. It was here that on April 22, 1541, Ignatius and five Companions made their solemn vows and then celebrated the mass at the altar of the Virgin. Here we will celebrate our Mass. Then we will continue to the Catacombs of San Calixto, the underground burial place of the first Christians. The rest of the day is free. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.
  • DAY 4: ROME: TOUR NECROPOLIS, BASILICA OF SAN PEDRO AND PRIVATE VATICAN MUSEUMS

In the morning we will celebrate our Mass very early in the Tomb of St. Peter. After Mass we will take a guided tour of the Necropolis, underground excavations located below the Basilica of San Pedro (these tickets are always subject to final confirmation within 48 hours before the day of the visit). Then we will visit the Basilica. Here we will see the famous statue of Michelangelo of the Virgin Mary holding his crucified son, known as La Pietà. We will also visit the tomb of Pope John Paul II. Then we will have free time to visit the excellent shops of the area with religious items, or climb on our own to the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, where you can contemplate a wonderful view of the city. Later we will visit the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, where we will admire the beauty of the work of Michelangelo of the Last Judgment and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
  • DAY 5: ROME: VISIT OF THE JESUIT PLACES

This morning we started at Capitoline Hill overlooking the Forum. The stairs that lead to the square, known as the Cordonata, were designed by Michelangelo (as well as the pavement pattern of the square). Walking along the famous staircase of Michelangelo, we reached the Church of Jesus, the Mother Church of the Order of the Jesuits, which began in 1568. Here is where St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Order of the Jesuits, rests in peace. The building of this s. V points to the arrival of Christianity in Rome. Here we will celebrate the Mass. We will also visit the Ignatian Rooms that are nearby. We will also visit St. Ignatius and St. Louis of the french, the house of San Mateo Caravaggio and the Angel. The rest of the afternoon is free. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
  • DAY 6: ROME: PAPAL HEARING AND TIME FREE AFTERNOON

In the morning, transfer to the Vatican City for the Papal Audience with the Holy Father (subject to Vatican programming). The rest of the afternoon will be at our disposal to explore the city on our own. Tonight dinner will be on our own, therefore, our accompanying guide will give us some suggestions of places to go for dinner.
  • DAY 7: ROME: LA STORTA AND LA ROMA ANTIGUA

Transfer by bus to celebrate Mass and visit the Chapel of Storte - mark the place outside the city where Ignatius, on his way to Rome, stopped to pray and received his mysterious vision of Christ and the Father. We will continue along the Ignacio road and enter the city walking through the People's Gate as Ignacio did with Pierre Favre in November 1537, shortly after his experience at La Storta. In March 1540, another Jesuit, Francisco Javier, from Portugal - and then India - passed through this door. After crossing the door and reaching the interior of the city, we will pray in the Church of Santa Maria del Pueblo, as so many pilgrims have done for centuries. In the afternoon, after having lunch on our own, we will visit the Ancient Rome. We will see the Roman Forum; We will also visit the interior of the Coliseum. His real name is Flavian Amphitheater, after the emperor who built it in the s. I d.C. Colosseum refers to the "colossal" statue of Nero that once stood at the entrance. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel. I d.C.
  • DAY 8: CITY TOUR AND TIVOLI EXCURSION

We will begin the day with the celebration of the Mass in the Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. After Mass, we will start our visit on foot of the city, we will start by the Trevi Fountain, where we will throw the traditional three coins. We will continue with the Plaza de Trinità dei Monti at the top of the Plaza de España, from where we can admire such a romantic panoramic view of the city of Rome, then we will cross the city towards the Pantheon and finish in Piazza Navona. Later we will go to Tivoli, built on the slopes of the Sabina Hills. We will visit Villa d'Este, one of the most charming places of the late Renaissance, famous for its gardens, fountains, waterfalls and statues. Tonight we will all gather for our farewell dinner at a local restaurant. After dinner, return to the hotel.
