Sanctuary of Loyola
In Euskera Loiola is the name of the Sanctuary and Basilica of Loyola, is a religious complex built around the birthplace of Ignacio de Loyola (for Catholics, St. Ignatius of Loyola), founder of the Company of Jesus, known as the Jesuits . It is located in the district of Loyola of the municipality of Guipuzcoa of Azpeitia in the Basque Country (Spain). The sanctuary is located on the banks of the Urola River between the towns of Azpeitia and Azcoitia.
Ignacio de Loyola, who was actually called Iñigo López de Loyola, was the son of Loyola, Beltrán Ibáñez de Oñaz (head of the Oñacinos) and Ondarresa Marina Sánchez de Licona, a member of an important Biscayan family. He was born in the year 1491 in the family tower house in Loyola.
The Society of Jesus became a powerful institution that had much influence in the leading Catholic leadership. Ignacio, his founder, was named a saint and, of course, his birthplace became a place of devotion. When in the seventeenth century the tower house where it was born was ceded to the Jesuits, they built there, around the birthplace of its founder, a religious complex in which stands out its basilica.
